Vixens: Jamaya the Beauty Guru

What’s your name and where are you from?
Jamaya Moore from Baltimore, MD

How has being natural affected your life? How do you feel about this natural hair “movement”?
It’s great that women are becoming more aware of how to care for their natural hair. I was an early adopter. I stopped getting perms back in 2007 while pregnant with my youngest daughter. During that time, I learned that my natural curls weren't very coarse and didn't need chemicals for straightening.
I chopped all my hair off the day before I resigned from my old job. It was very liberating!  I wore twist- outs, mohawks and experimented with color for about 2 years. Last summer, I shaved my head to a low Cesar. I absolutely love it!
The movement has been beneficial because it has sparked conversations on confidence and self-love.  As women, we have so many options for our hair. It’s great that women are uniting over hair; but, it’s just hair. Chop it, weave it, color it, braid it or shave it off. As long as you’re confident, any hair style will look great.

Do you have staple hair products? If so what are they?
Pure whipped shea butter , Oyin Handmade Greg Juice, Oyin Handmade Brown Sugar Pomade, Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Shampoo & Conditioner .

Hard as it may seem how would you describe your hair and the regime you use to maintain it?
I don’t really have a concrete hair regimen. I’m in the process of growing my hair out so I keep it clean and moisturized.

Here at The Vixen Box we love NAILS. What is your nail pic for this season? What is a go-to nail look for you?
I work with my hands so it’s essential that my nails are manicured. I have a phenomenal nail stylist who always keeps my nails on point. I’m the client who is willing to try anything. We get inspired by art, fashion and beauty trends. I’m currently obsessed with bright gel-polish shades and almond-shaped nails.

From our point of view it looks like “Big Tings A Gwan” are in the works for you…. Care to talk about your upcoming projects?
My work is constantly evolving. I primarily work with private and corporate clients. I never know the scale of the project until I review the call sheet. Last week I worked on a shoot with Complex Media. Next week, I’m working on a 5 day video shoot with Pandora Jewelry so I’m pretty stoked. I never know what the future holds…

If you were deserted on an island and had to choose one piece of makeup from your kit, what would you pick?
If I were deserted on an island, I wouldnt take a piece of makeup with me. I would opt for my favorite sunscreen from Water Babies with SPF 70.

There are tons of make-up tips, but if you could give the readers one piece of advice what would it be?
Even though I'm a makeup artist, I always encourage my clients to get a good skin care regimen in place. Good skin makes an awesome canvas for makeup.

Also, less is more. You don't need a lot of makeup to get dolled up. Most times concealer, masacara and a great lip will do the trick.

Pat McGrath is an icon in the beauty and fashion industry. Why do you think her career has such longevity?
Pat McGrath is the Mother Nature of makeup. All makeup trends are birthed from her. I believe that her longevity can be attributed to the fact that she's always challenging herself. She gets inspired from everything around her. To top it off, she works with the most talented and well respected people in fashion and beauty. Pat McGrath is makeup.

Favorite lipsticks out right now?
My favorite lipsticks right now are MAC's matte shades (Ruby Woo, Snob, Velvet Teddy) and NARS matte lipstick pencil in Dragon Girl. Matte shades pack a lot of color and have great staying power.

Mac Ruby Woo

Mac Velvet Teddy
Mac Snob
How would you describe your personality?

I’m very down to earth. I’m very curious. I love meeting new people and engaging in thought provoking conversations. I’m friendly. I have a warm and genuine energy that attracts people. I am social; but, I cherish my alone time.

Here at The Vixen Box, health and fitness is major. I know for me I am working on getting myself right physically and emotionally by eating clean and incorporating exercise into my life. What do you do as far as health and fitness to stay or reach a level of good health?
I’m a glutton for pain and love feeling the burn after a hard workout. I exercise at least 2-3 times per week. My workouts vary from strength training to taking cross-fit classes. I eat lots of fruits and veggies. I just bought a Magic Bullet so I make a bunch of smoothies. I’m anti-red meat because it makes me feel heavy and bloated.

Do you meditate? If so, do you mind sharing how often and what the benefits have been for you?
I normally meditate immediately after I wake up. I sit on the edge of my bed for at least 10 minutes, close my eyes and relax. Meditating regulates my energy. I approach my day more focused and invigorated.

What music are you listening to and what books are you currently reading? Any suggestions…
I’m a huge Jay-Z fan (OG from Reasonable Doubt) so naturally, I’m listening to his newest  album Magna Carter Holy Grail, Emeli Sande’ and 2Chainz
I’m always reading books about business and faith. I’m reading I Declare: 31 Promises to Speak over Your Life (Joel Osteen), Admired: 21 Ways to Double Your Value (Mark Thompson), Talk Less, Say More (Connie Dieken)

Describe Spirituality to you…
I’m not a very religious person but I have tremendous faith. With all the craziness in the world, I know that a higher power is watching over us.  A few years ago, I read The Secret by Rhonda Byrne; it totally changed my outlook on life.  A main theme in the book is: Ask, believe and receive. The universe is always listening. When you have pure and genuine intentions, you will be rewarded.
Despite all my setbacks, I still come out on top. Three years ago, I quit my job with hardly any savings or a real plan other than to become a freelance makeup artist. Today, my business is continuously growing and I’m living my best life.

Any words of encouragement you want to give to our readers on being confident and loving who you are?
We are all unique. Celebrate your identity. You’re one of kind, limited edition. Always work on being a better person. Looks fade away but beautiful personalities are always remembered. Also, don’t be so hard on yourself. Life is about learning lessons. Experience life. Don’t limit yourself.
“The trick is to enjoy life. Don’t wish away your days waiting for better ones ahead”-UNKNOWN

My freelance/entrepreneur journey, inspiration and a small bit of makeup is what you can expect from my My Blog and Portfolio.

What makes you a Vixen: (Here at The Vixen Box a Vixen is someone who loves, accepts everything and everyone for who they are. They spread love, share love, and give love. Conquering the world one day at a time, while keeping it funky and edgy.)
I understand that I am a vessel. I help bring beauty to people’s lives. I’ve been blessed with a duty to be a phenomenal mother, successful entrepreneur and strong woman…while looking chic!
