Vixens: Hair Crush on Chime Edwards!

For I know the plans I have for you

What’s your name and where are you from?
My name is Chime Edwards (My friends call me Runway).  I live in Jackson, Ms.

How has being natural affected your life? How do you feel about this natural hair “movement”?
The natural movement is..... I never thought I would see so many women embracing their natural hair. I love how so many Black women are uniting and taking steps to live a healthy lifestyle beyond just their hair. It's also dope to see how many entrepreneurs have started businesses stemming from the movement.  After I started vlogging under HairCrush on YouTube, things  took off really quickly. It still amazes me that over 110,000 people are subscribed to my channel. So many opportunities have opened for me and I've built so many great friendships since I started vlogging.

How long did you transition for? Any tips you want to give to readers, tips you wish you would have known when you were transitioning?
I transitioned for 2 years and about 3 months. My best advice is to stay away from heat, find a staple style that looks great and don't feel bad for rocking it all the time. I did. I rocked braid-outs constantly. Make sure you are fully caring for your hair now and only big chop when you're ready. Don't feel pressured into it.

Do you have staple hair products? If so what are they?
I don't have staple products anymore. I'm currently trying out different products to find the best ones for my hair. I do love Giovanni's and Aubrey Organics hair product line.

Hard as it may seem how would you describe your hair and the regime you use to maintain it?
My hair is wild, a thicky-thick girl and a bit dry. I try to wash my hair every week to week and half.  I usually only co-wash, deep condition my hair then apply a leave-in conditioner and an oil to seal it. I only use shampoo when my hair needs a thorough cleansing every few months.

What IS fashion to you or FOR you?
I'm a creative person and fashion gives me another opportunity to express my creativity.  I love art and I'm a very visual person so to me fashion is just another form of art.

When folks say “Natural Hair Ain’t For Everybody” or anything that can be construed as negative about natural hair, what words would you like to share with them?
I honestly believe natural hair is for everyone. I pass no judgment on those who decide to relax their hair but I do think every Black woman should experience being natural at some point in their lives.  It bothers me when people say someone's hair is too nappy to go natural or if only they had good hair they would embrace their hair. I think those individuals must look at the hate they are feeding themselves and others for what it is really is.

“Big Tings AGwan” are definitely in the works for you. Care to talk about any future events or projects coming up?
I just finished filming a big project a few weeks back but I'm under contact so I can't speak about it which sucks but it would take the natural hair vlogging world to a new level. My fingers are crossed in hopes that everything works out. There are a couple of campaigns coming up and meet ups that I've been invited to be a guest vlogger at this fall. I'm also working on music. I like to express myself in a variety of ways. I try to keep everyone updated on my blog

Sometimes when we get into a relationship we can lose our sense of “self”.  Some advice on how to maintain your identity while in a relationship?
You must remind yourself that you don't want to "fall apart" if you and your significant other ever broke up. So, you must take time away from him to nurture your interests and hobbies. Do things on your own or with friends. You have to maintain the other relationships in your life. They are all equally important. The main thing is to make sure your boyfriend isn't the only "fun" in your life and YOU are your main priority.

Where do you draw inspiration from? Not only for fashion, but your art, music, poetry, ….life?
From everywhere and everything. Someone can make a comment or I see something on television or in nature that sparks an idea. I encourage people to soak in the world around them. God gave us beautiful inspiration and art. The sky and clouds and the different formations they create fascinate me. I think it's the most beautiful natural art we have on earth. All you have to do is look up.

- Sexuality is celebrated here on The Vixen Box through “The Clitoris Taboo” series on the blog, meaning women’s sexuality is a “taboo” subject .What IS sexuality?
Sexuality is shaped mainly by our personal tastes and who we are. What attracts you, your desires, fantasies, etc. It's who and  what you crave sexually. You should never be ashamed of this as long as you maintain healthy sexual practices and you are upholding your spiritual beliefs.

-Music is such a great medium? What and who are you listening to now?
I love Hip Hop. I'm currently listening to Naz' Illmatic. It's the first time I've  played it in years. It's a really dope album.

-  Although I only have one tattoo (for now) I am a tattoo aficionado. Your tattoos are literally works of art. What is your favorite or more spiritual tattoo?
I don't have any tattoos but I've will soon! Yay! I don't want to say what it is exactly but the  words encourage eternal life and are connected to my Christian faith.

-  Here at The Vixen Box, health and fitness is major. I know for me I am working on getting myself right physically and emotionally by eating clean and incorporating exercise into my life. What do you do as far as health and fitness to stay or reach a level of good health?
I used to be the queen of fast food and no exercise but I knew I needed to change. Now, I eat much cleaner (no beef or pork) and I exercise 3 times per week.

-  Do you meditate? If so, do you mind sharing how often and what the benefits have been for you? I pray quite a bit. In the morning, throughout the day and night. It is the only way I can stay connected to God and to be able to clearly listen to His voice and make good decisions that glorify Him instead of getting sucked into doing what pleases me. Praying helps you see clearly and overcoming problems throughout the day is much easier.

- Describe your blog and how readers can get in touch with you.
My blog is dope. Haha If I do say so myself. I cover  style, natural hair care, art and spirituality. It's a reflection of my personal style and taste. Things I love. It was created to inspire others by sharing my personal confessions and spirituality posts. We all have struggles but you can help someone by sharing your personal experiences of success and failures.

What makes you a Vixen:
I'm a vixen because I'm a loving  person who walks to my own African beat. I express myself through all avenues that allow me to be creative and I strive  to encourage and inspire women just like me through  vlogging and blogging. I'm a vixen because I know who I am and whose I am. I'm a hippie at heart. My goal is to share love, help others where ever I can and only give out positive energy to the world. We have enough of the other crap.

-   Favorite Quote:  "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." - Jeremiah 29:11

We think individuality is celebrated here…. but in sometimes in others reality it is not true. What words of encouragement would you give someone who is having a hard time not being part of the status quo and is unapologetically unique?
If you're not a part of the status quo you're in the best position. What fun is it living inside the box? Outside is where it's at!  I feel bad for those who want to break out but they're afraid. We were not created to be just alike. When you change yourself to fit into what someone else wants you to be you're dishonoring yourself. You are putting their desires over your own. You must always be true to yourself. It is impossible to fulfill your purpose in life if you're not being who you were meant to be. Embrace your inner weirdo. Weird is cool. Fitting in is a snooze.

A special thanks goes out to Chime for allowing me to make her a Vixen Feature. Make sure you follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and on Facebook for more exclusive Vixen Features, and giveaways! <3 Bee
